I completed a BSc in 2006, majoring in Genetics and Botany. I am currently involved in an honours project which looks at the alkaloids present in the plant genus Huperzia. This project explores the possibility of tissue culture being utilised in the production of alkaloids present, particularly those belonging to the Huperzine family. Huperzia species have been utilised in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries and recent research has shown that an alkaloid present, Huperzine A, has been very effective in the treatment of Alzhimers disease.
