Quarantine Regulations

SENDING SPECIMENS TO MELU

Herbarium material entering Australia is subject to inspection by the Australian Quarantine Inspection Service (AQIS).

All herbarium material sent to Australia must be packaged and labelled in accordance with the instructions below.  Non-vascular specimens (algae, fungi, lichens, mosses and hepatics) and vascular plants listed in Schedules 4 and 6 of the Quarantine Proclamation 1998 require an import permit to be sent to Australia (See point 4 below).

The following measures will help to facilitate the smooth passage of herbarium material through the quarantine inspection process:

  1. Contact the MELU Director or Collections Manager prior to sending any herbarium material to MELU.  They will inform you of the quarantine requirements and email/fax you any documentation needed to accompany the specimens through AQIS.
  2. Please ensure that your loans/exchange/donation paperwork clearly states:
    • what the material is for (eg. loan for scientific research or return of loan)
    • the correct MELU address
    • the MELU CITES code (AU 043)
  3. Attach the following documents to the outside of each box in an envelope or ziplock plastic bag:
    • completed Quarantine Declaration (printed on your institutional letterhead)
    • itemised taxon list (e.g. copy of loan species list)

Please include a second copy of these documents inside the box, with the usual loan/exchange documentation

  4. Labelling
