Volunteer/Internship Programs

The University of Melbourne Herbarium runs a Volunteer/Extra Curricular Work Experience Scheme for local students and an Intership Program for international science students. These Programs enable students to gain skills in plant sciences to compliment and enhance their undergraduate degrees.

Through the Programs students can increase their knowledge and skills in plant classification, identification, nomenclature and/or learn about herbarium curation and what's involved with managing a scientific or historical collection.

If you're interested in joining the scheme, all training is provided so all that's needed is an interest in and desire to learn about plants -marine, flowering, non-flowering, fungal, etc. Volunteers are required to help with a variety of tasks. These range from filing and mounting specimens to helping with plant identifications or specimen loans. Prior to starting work all volunteers are given a safety induction and possible tasks are discussed so that you can select a project that meets your interests and requirements. Hours are flexible (minimum 2 hours per week) and will be organised around your study commitments.
