Sewing a seed: Art inspired by the Herbarium

University of Melbourne, Parkville

Through 15 illustrated stories, Sowing a Seed: Art Inspired by the Herbarium showcases collections in the University of Melbourne Herbarium. Each story comprises an artwork and associated herbarium specimen.

Sticherus orange/red small pouch by Nicola Cerini.
Items selected for the exhibition are diverse. Traditional botanical illustrations have deliberately been omitted to demonstrate atypical botanical art. With production dates spanning over 4 centauries, variable forms, and numerous functions, the exhibited items illustrate the longstanding relationship between botany and the arts.

Herbaria bridge the gap between art and science. Sowing a Seed aims to present many links between these often opposing realms. Somewhere between a scientific museum demonstration and an artistic gallery exposé, Sowing a Seed aims to inspire, educate, and open your mind to the creative art of botanical science.
