Natalie completed her masters thesis in 2001 on "Effective
survey methods for detecting plants".
Andrew Bearlin
Andrew finished his Honours
thesis on "Environmental Risk Assessment using a stage-structured,
stochastic population model for seagrass" in 1998. Following
graduation he worked in the Freshwater Ecology Group at the Arthur
Rylah Institute for Environmental Research
Sarah Bekessy
Sarah completed her PhD in 2002.
Her topic was the conservation biology of the
vulnerable and endemic South American Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria
araucana). She is now a lecturer at RMIT Melbourne, teaching in
environmental studies and sustainability.
Sjaan Bidwell
Sjaan was a member of our lab while she
did her PhD thesis (completed in 2001). It was on plants that are
hyperaccumulators of heavy metals, and was supervised by Jens
Sommer-Knudsen and Ian Woodrow.
Pep Blanks (now Turner)
Pep did her Honours thesis here in
1996 on modelling the distribution of bryophytes. She went on to do
her PhD at the University
of Tasmania with Prof Jamie Kirkpatrick and is now working at Forestry Tasmania

Ryan Chisholm
Ryan completed his Honours thesis "Neutral
Theory and Western Basalt Plains Grasslands" here in 2004. He
is currently studying his PhD at Princeton.

Chris Davies
Chris's PhD thesis was on the power of survey and monitoring designs.
Tan
Deneewat
Tan's MSc thesis was on structure
and composition of a Thai forest. She since returned to Thailand.
Martin Drechsler
Martin was a postdoc here from 1996 to 1997. He worked
on population models for a number of species including the
orange-bellied parrot and Banksia goodii. He subsequently
worked at the Max Planck Institute in Germany.
David Duncan
Dave spent 6 months with us while completing his
PhD thesis. He now works at the Arthur
Rylah Institute for Environmental Research.

Carys
Evans
Carys completed her honours with us in 2004.
She now works at the Department
of Primary Industries.
Jo Evans
Jo did the research project for her
masters in Environmental Science with us in 1999. It was on "Options
and uncertainties for carbon emission trade in the mining and minerals
industry". She now works in Canberra at the Australian Greenhouse Office.
Julian Fox
Julian was a postdoctoral fellow here and worked
on quantitative methods (such as PVA) for managing rare fauna and flora
in Tasmanian forests. He now works at the University of Queensland.

Kate Graham
Kate did her Honours year with us in 2000, developing
an epidemiological model for Myrtle Wilt. She became a PhD student at
Stirling University, Scotland and is now living in Croatia.

Brooke Hecht
Brooke completed her masters thesis with us in 1998 on edge effects in
forest patches. She completed her PhD at Yale studying "The Edge
Paradox: A Zone of Order or Chaos? An Icelandic Case Study
Investigating Forces Associated with Edges in Forest Landscapes"

Courtney Johnson
Courtney was a forestry undergraduate student and did a project with us
on the Eltham Copper Butterfly.

Marie Keatley
Marie did her PhD on the flowering phenology of Eucalypts in Central
Victoria, finishing in 1999. She is now working at the School of Forest and Ecosystem Science as an Adjunct Senior Fellow.

Linda Lee
Linda finished her PhD in 1998 on "The feeding
ecology of the orange-bellied parrot". Since then she has
worked in Brisbane with the Queensland Environment Protection Agency.
Nick Linacre
Nick finished his PhD in 2003 on mathematical risk
assessment models for genetically modified organisms. He since moved to
the USA. Some of his research interests are outlined on his web page.
Prema Lucas
Prema finished her Honours thesis on "Population modelling of
sambar deer in Lake Eildon NP" in 2001. Prema is now
working with us as a research assistant.

Mick McCarthy
Mick did his Honours and PhD theses with Mark and has worked with us as
a postdoc. He now works at ARCUE, and we continue
close collaboration with him. His home page is here.
Debbie McDonald
Debbie's PhD topic was on the dietary requirements of orange-bellied
parrots and arboreal mammals. She went on to work on the nutritional
ecology of zoo animals.
Rachel Martin
Rachel did her Honours thesis with us in 1996 on a "Spatial
Analysis of Eucalypt dieback at Coranderrk, Victoria". She has just
completed her masters as a student with us.
Peter Minchin
Peter shared the lab with us when he was working in
Botany as a lecturer. He is now a Assistant Professor in the Biological Sciences Department Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
Ayesha Moss
Ayesha completed her Honours with us in 2005.
She looked at predicting distributions of alpine plants. Following her Honours, she spent three months
as a field researcher in Alaska and is now working at a mapping company in Melbourne.

Hoa Nguyen
Hoa worked withus while working on his Masters
thesis "A Population Viability Analysis for the Sarus Crane".
Emily Nicholson
Emily did her Honours thesis with us in 2001 on reserve design and
conservation of threatened grasslands around Melbourne. She completed her post-doc with David Wilcove at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton and is now a Post-doctoral Research Associate.

Jennie Pearce
Jennie did her PhD thesis with Mark on "The delineation and
prediction of habitat, with particular reference to the endangered
helmeted honeyeater". She now works for the Canadian Forest
Service in Ontario.
Joanne Potts
Jo completed her Honours thesis "A population viability analysis (PVA) for
Leionema ralstonii (Rutaceae)" with us in 2003. She is now completing her PhD at the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM) at St Andrews in Scotland.

Dan Ramp
Dan finished his PhD thesis in 2001 with Graeme Coulson, Peter Minchin
and Mark as supervisors. It was on kangaroo distribution and florsitic
patterns at Yan Yean Reservoir. He now works at the University of
New South Wales.
Nicolas Ray
Nicolas was a postdoc
here from 2003 to 2004. He worked on the population dynamics of Sambar
deer (Cervus unicolor) in Victoria, and on the subjective
uncertainties associated with habitat suitability maps. He is now back
in Switzerland as a postdoc in the Computational and Molecular
Population Genetics Lab in Bern.
Cassia Read
Cassia did her Honours year with us in 1998 on "Assessment of
floristic edge effects within fragmented dry sclerophyll forests of
North Eastern Melbourne". Since then she has spent a year at Mark Westoby's
lab and has worked at RMIT. Cassia returned to our lab as a PhD
student in 2005.
Helen Regan
Helen was a postdoc here from 1997 to 1999. Helen is now Assistant Professor in Biology at
San Diego State University.
Tracey
Regan
Tracey completed her PhD thesis with us, where she
evaluated the performance of various methods used for estimating the
risk of extinction. She went on to complete a postdoc in Hugh
Possingham's lab. Tracey now works at NOAA Southwest
Fisheries Science Center.
Louise Rodda
Louise completed her Honours year with us in 2000, with a thesis on a
rare Swainsona species.

Gabrielle Sandercock
Gabrielle did her Honours year with us, with Peter Minchin as her
supervisor. Her thesis was on "The effectiveness of data transformations
in indirect ordination". Unfortunately she passed away not long after
she had completed her thesis.
Ruth Singer
Ruth finished her Honours with us in 1996 on "The regeneration
ecology of Kunzea ericoides at Coranderrk Reserve, Healesville". She
is now doing her PhD in
linguistics. She is now a Postdoc at Department of Linguistics / Afdeling Taalwetenschap
Rob Smith
Rob finished his masters with us in 2000 on "An investigation into
the relationships between anthropogenic forest disturbance patterns,
population viability and landscape indices" with Mark and Ian
Ferguson as his supervisors. He is now working for State Forests of NSW in
Bathurst.

Charles Todd
Charles submitted his PhD thesis "Tools for the conservation
management of wildlife under uncertainty". He is now working in
the Freshwater Ecology Group at the Arthur
Rylah Institute for Environmental Research.
Arn Tolsma
Arn did his Honours thesis with us in 1997 on "Measuring the
success of gold mine rehabilitation in Victoria's box-ironbark forests".
He is now in Forestry at the University of Melbourne, finishing a PhD
supervised by Kevin Tolhurst and Steve Read on "The effects of fire
and grazing on the energy reserves of resprouting plants in Victoria's
alpine grasslands". He now works at the Arthur Rylah Research Institute.

Terry Walshe
Terry finished his PhD with us in 2001 on modelling disturbance dynamics
in forested landscapes and designing management strategies for dealing
with them. He went on to work in Albany, WA, as the manager of the
Centre for Excellence, University of Western Australia. Terry is now working here as a postdoc on "Elicitation of alternative model structures in environmental contexts".
Debra Weddall
Deb did her Honours year with us 2000/2001. Her topic was "Monitoring
myrtle wilt: a cost-accuracy analysis of two survey techniques".
Didik Widyatmoko
Didik was a postdoc here for 18
months from 2003 to 2005. He continued work commenced during
his PhD into the population status, demography and habitat preferences
of the threatened lipstick palm Cyrtostachys renda Blume, in
Kerumutan Reserve, Sumatra. He was also involved in the ARC
funded project on the effects of global warming on Australian alpine
plants. He is presently with The Bogor Botanical Gardens, Institute of Sciences.

Kuniko Yamada
Kuniko worked with us building
a population model of Ibex in Pakistan. She went on to work at Biosis Research.
