Travel Scholarships for Postgraduate Students
General Criteria
- Scholarships are available to assist students to attend national (Australian) and international (outside of Australia) conferences. This money can also be used to support travel that is relevant and academically justifiable but not essential to a student's research. Travel scholarships are not to be used to support travel directly related to a student’s project (e.g., field work).
- A scholarship of up to $1,250 is available for international conferences and up to $800 for national conferences. Students are eligible for only one scholarship during their candidature. This includes those students who are awarded a Nicholas Bequest Travel Scholarship.
- Students are eligible to apply for a travel scholarship at any time during their candidature. Normally, however, students apply for a scholarship between 12 months and 3.5 years of candidature.
- Students going to a conference are expected to make a presentation of their work at the conference (either a poster or talk).
- Applications should be submitted by mid-March or mid-Aug each year. Precise dates will be circulated by email. Students should consult with their supervisor before submitting the completed application form to Sylvia Hossain. Application forms are available from this site or from Sylvia. A completed application includes a letter of support from the supervisor, a proposed travel itinerary, a draft abstract of the proposed presentation, and a budget showing estimated costs and the amount of funding sought from other sources.
- Students attending international conferences are encouraged to seek additional support through the Melbourne Scholarships Program.
Applications for Melbourne Abroad Travelling Scholarships (MATS) and Postgraduate Overseas Research Experience Scholarships (PORES) must be submitted by either 31 March or 31 Aug each year. Students should familiarize themselves with the selection criteria before applying. - Students are expected to submit a short report describing the benefits of their trip upon return. This report should be left with either Ed Newbigin, the postgraduate coordinator, or with Sylvia Hossain, the Head of School’s assistant.
