Majors in the new Melbourne New Generation Degrees

Six Majors in the new BSc degree are offered through the School of Botany, in collaboration with other Science departments, including Zoology and Genetics.

All majors build on the first-year biological sciences package.  Subjects are also offered as electives to interested students in other degrees, including B. Arts, B. Biomed. B. Environments, and B. Comm.

Biotechnology Major

Biotechnology is the use of biological knowledge to develop new processes and products for industry, agribusiness and health.
Plant Biotechnology includes core botany subjects, as well as offerings in cell biology, genetics, biochemistry and specially designed subjects that present practices in Biotechnology and commercialisation.

New subjects to be introduced:
xxx-2y Introduction to Biotechnology
xxx-3y Biotechnology in Practice

Cell and Developmental Biology Major

Specialisation Plant Cell Biology Major: provides a broad understanding of cell structure and function, genetics, the molecular basis of development and experimental techniques.  A focus is plant and protist cells but the knowledge gained can be applied to a range of organisms and lead to a range of careers, including biotechnology, agriculture, government agencies, and medical areas.

Subjects in the Plant specialisation include:
xxx-2yy Fundamentals of Cell Biology I
xxx-2yy Fundamentals of Cell Biology II
606-201 Plant and Environment

606-304 Functional Plant Biology
606-3yy Plant Cell Biology
606-309 Frontiers of Cell Biology

Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Major

prepares students for a career or research in plant ecology, conservation biology, systematics and taxonomy, biodiversity assessment, and environmental consulting.

Specialisations include:
Ecology
Conservation Biology
Evolution and Biodiversity

Subjects include:
xxx-2yy Ecology
606-201 Plants and the Environment
606-303 Plant Systematics and Evolution
606-305 Vegetation Management and Conservation
606-310 Field Botany
xxx-3yy Ecological Applications
xxx-3yy Evolutionary Ecology
600-303 Environmental Risk assessment

Environmental Science major

leads to environmental consulting, natural resource management, with skills in risk assessment and environmental monitoring.  Subjects are taken across disciplines (Botany, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Statistics, Zoology etc). Botany subjects can be chosen from the list under Ecology.

Marine Biology major

is the study of marine organisms and biological systems, and leads to further study and careers in marine ecology, marine environmental monitoring, marine biodiversity.  We have a strong link with Zoology — Marine Botany subjects focus on phytoplankton and seaweeds, taxonomy, ecology and evolution.

Marine Botany subjects include:
606-203 Phytoplankton and Seaweeds of Australia
xxx-2yy Ecology
606-3yy Marine Botany

Plant Science major

leads to various careers and pathways to research and higher degrees.  Graduates will develop a comprehensive knowledge of plant biology, from cells and molecules, to evolution and the environment.

Core 200 level subjects:
606-201 Plants and the Environment
606-201 Plant Biodiversity
Electives:
606-203 Phytoplankton and Seaweeds of Australia
Core 300 level subject:
606-3yy Functional Plant Biology
Electives:
606-303 Plant Systematics and Evolution
606-305 Vegetation Management and Conservation
606-310 Field Botany
606-3yy Marine Botany
606-3yy Plant Cell Biology
