Finding a Research Project & Supervisor

Research areas and other information about the School are described in our annual report. Further information about our research may be found by on our Research Page.

You are encouraged to contact our academic staff directly and discuss your research interests with them.  Please provide a full CV and details of your academic record so that your suitability for higher research and ability to compete for a postgraduate research scholarship can be assessed.

Contact the School's postgraduate coordinator, A/Prof Ed Newbigin (edwardjn@unimelb.edu.au; 03 8344 4871), if you are having trouble identifying a supervisor.

Application process - Local Students (including Scholarships)

[Local students includes Australian and New Zealand citizens and Australian permanent residents]

1.Together with an academic supervisor, decide on a suitable research project.

2. Once the academic supervisor has agreed, you should apply for postgraduate degree at School of Graduate Research (SGR).

3. Lodge the completed application with either the School of Botany or SGR. There is no formal closing date of applications. Note that you must apply separately for a scholarship and that acceptance into a PhD should not be taken to mean that you will also receive a scholarship.

4. Concurrently, follow the on-line SCHOLS process outlined at Melbourne Scholarships Office and apply for a postgraduate scholarship, taking note that close for applications is generally late October (the link details actual deadline). There are a number of different scholarships on offer, including Australian Postgraduate Award (APA) and Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS).

5. If successful, you will receive an offer of acceptance for both PhD and scholarship separately. You will be required to accept the offer and enroll on-line.

6. If you have been unsuccessful in gaining a scholarship but successful in gaining entry into a PhD, please talk to your supervisor or the School’s postgraduate coordinator about other ways to support your study.

Application Process - International Students (including Scholarships)

1.Together with an academic supervisor, decide on a suitable research project.  Check eligibility status for a scholarship by referring to the Science Eligibility document located on the Research in Science webpage

2. Apply on-line for a postgraduate degree at International Centre.  This application automatically includes application for various scholarships as well.  Some of the scholarships available are the Endeavour International Postgraduate Research (IPRS), Melbourne International Research Scholarship (MIRS) and Melbourne International Fee Remission Scholarship (MIFRS). Please take note that the deadline for IPRS scholarships is generally in mid-August.

3. If successful, you will receive an offer of acceptance for both PhD and scholarship. This offer will provide information on how to arrange for visas.

4  If you have been unsuccessful in gaining a scholarship but successful in gaining entry into a PhD, please talk to your supervisor or the School’s postgraduate coordinator about other ways to support your study.
